Last month 71 provisional members took a tour of the Junior League of Charlotte’s past, present and future.
The group met at the WearHouse and boarded the bus. Did you know that Claire Danes shopped there during shooting for the hit Showtime drama Homeland, which was filmed in Charlotte? That is just one of the many fun facts shared on the tour.
We are proud to share our past here in Charlotte and the ways in which we have served our community, so the tour highlighted the Baby House, IAJL, the Nature Museum, Mint Museum and the Children’s Theater. Learning about our past provides our prospective members with the understanding of how we have gotten to where we are today and our goals for future contributions to our community.
Stepping into the present, the tour explored sites such as JLC’s involvement in the Discovery Place, Levine Children’s Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House. Provisionals were also able to hear from active members how JLC can prepare you for a nonprofit board position, for example, many of our members serve on the board of Teen Health Connection. It was exciting to see all the ways you JLC can help you become a more active member of our community, through the JLC and other great organizations that work to make Charlotte a better place to live.
Provisionals got an exciting glimpse into the JLC’s future with a stop at Reid Park. We are about improving the lives of children and now families in the Charlotte and surrounding areas with our new cornerstone focus. Learning about our past and our community provided a backdrop, but it was in talking about our future that the biggest impact was felt. The potential and the need at Reid Park is great and it was a wonderful experience for the provisionals to see the impact they have the opportunity to make on our community. We’ll share more details from that stop here on the NewsRelease Blog next week.
The tour group also included a few transfer members. We welcomed them to Charlotte with some Southern hospitality and pointed out some of Charlotte’s local attractions such as the NASCAR Hall of Fame and some of the locals’ favorite restaurants, such as Amelie’s.
Fun was had by all, but most importantly, it was a time to bond as a group of women committed to giving back. One member explained, “Being a part of this experience is something that will definitely stay with me as a highlight of my League career.”
The tour was organized by Debbie Hull, navigated by Audrey Hood, and narrated by Erin Maddrey. Thank you, ladies, for planning this fun bonding experience for our provisional and transfer members!
