The Community Awareness Committee Speaker Series increases awareness and educates members of the JL Charlotte and the Charlotte/Mecklenburg community about issues concerning children’s mental health and health issues in families. This speaker series provides opportunities for experts in community health issues and related fields to discuss critical issues with the JLC and the greater Charlotte community.

Youth Speak Out: Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) Youth

Time Out Youth is a place where youths and their allies can experience a sense of belonging and community. Whether they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, a straight ally – or just don’t want to be labeled, they will be welcomed there. Time Out Youth offers a safe space for all and fully respects the journey of each individual.Time Out Youth’s speaker’s bureau provides a unique workshop lead by LGBTQ youth. The goal of this program is to provide LGBTQ youth with the tools to advocate for themselves as well as eliminate bias, homophobia, and transphobia. Trained LGBTQ youth tell their personal stories of coming out and community/family acceptance, then answer questions from the audience about their experiences. In addition, Time Out Youth’s Director of Youth Services’ O’Neale Atkinson will be educating attendees on the different terminology, barriers, challenges, etc., that LGBTQ youth experience in an effort to educate the community-at-large about this often invisible population.

Cyberbullying 101

Facebook, SnapChat, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Tumblr, Instagram, Vine, Meetup, ask.fm, texting, sexting, selfies…Today, the tools available to instantly communicate seems to grow faster than our ability to keep up with them. This discussion focuses on understanding the relatively new phenomenon of cyberbullying, and gives tips on how a parent/teacher/community member/sibling/etc. can intervene if a child they know is a victim of bullying or is bullying others.
Guest speaker, John Burns, LCSW has a Master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Iowa, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of North Carolina. John has been the Director of both inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities, a residential treatment facility for incarcerated youth, and a family therapy clinic. Katie Hampton, the co-speaker for the event has her Master’s degree in social work from the University of South Carolina and is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of North Carolina. She has worked with severely and persistently mentally ill adults in an inpatient setting, children in a foster care setting, children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and in an outpatient program for adolescents with substance abuse problems. She is also the Chair of the Junior League of Charlotte’s Community Awareness Committee.

Domestic Voilence – Engaging Communities and Empowering Victims

During this installment of the Community Awareness Committee’s Speaker’s Series, Mike Sexton (a Prevention and Public Awareness Specialist from Safe Alliance) and two domestic abuse survivors will educate the audience about the tragic reality of domestic violence, in addition to hosting a panel discussion in which members of the audience can openly dialogue with the representatives from Safe Alliance.
Issues that will be discussed during this training will include a description of what domestic violence is, the cycle of abuse, signs to look for when you suspect someone might be abused, safety planning, the impact of domestic violence on children, a discussion about how domestic violence victims are not always women, how engaging men is key to seeing this trend decrease, how attendees can help turn the tide of violence against women and girls, and information on local DV resources.
