Community Connection

A 1990s Junior League of Charlotte Contribution Continues to Make an Impact Decades Later

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen people lose their jobs and lose loved ones to this tragic virus. But we’ve also seen our community come together to help each other. That’s what the Junior League of Charlotte is all about. And now, in 2020, we’re seeing something the JLC helped launch back in the 1990s continuing to serve our community in a unique way in light of the challenges presented by COVID-19.

In the mid-1990s, the Junior League of Charlotte had over $350,000 dollars to contribute to a critical community need. Together with two large community partners and a land donation from the YMCA, the JLC helped build the child development center located on the campus of the Johnston YMCA in NoDa. With this facility and program, the JLC helped underserved children and families in that area. Thompson Child and Family Focus successfully ran the child development program for many years. The JLC is looking forward to once again partnering with Thompson Child and Family Focus in the upcoming League year. After Thompson Child and Family Focus, other JLC community partners such as Seigle Avenue Preschool and the Learning Collaborative operated the child care programs in the facility. The Johnston Y now runs the child development program.

Now, during this crisis, the program is providing free childcare for Novant and Atrium workers.
