A Rewarding Experience
It’s easy to say, with the wonderful placement opportunities we have, that many members of the JLC feel as if this past year has been truly rewarding. I feel that way, most of my close friends within the JLC feel that way, and Mavis Gant, Committee Chair of the Girls Leadership Program at KIPP feels that way as well.
Gant has actually spent the last two years working with the GLP at KIPP and has nothing but great things to say about the placement.
“Mentoring these 7th and 8th grade girls at KIPP has been nothing short of wonderful,” says Gant. “It has allowed me to develop more of a relationship with each of them and to see them grow and even come back after they graduate from the program to volunteer and just hang out. It’s really tremendous.”
KIPP Charlotte Girls Leadership Program is an eight month leadership program for 7th and 8th grade female students at KIPP Charlotte created by the JLC three years ago. We partner with the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha at Davidson College.
The goal of the program is to empower girls to see themselves as the future leaders of tomorrow and to equip them with the skills necessary to achieve their goals. The JLC hopes that through participation in this leadership program, the girls will experience increased self-esteem, enhanced confidence and healthier relationships with their family and friends.
The program consists of a team building kick-off followed by six workshops on topics such as Health, Financial Literacy, Women in Business and more. At the end of the program the girls are rewarded with a graduation and a special event.
“This year, we took the girls to see the Blue Man Group in uptown Charlotte,” says Gant. “For many it was their first to ever see a theater production.”
