New to the The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC)’s list of community placements this year is Heart Math Tutoring, a local nonprofit dedicated to offering mathematics support for students in need. Heart Math Tutoring works with JLC members to train and support the committee as tutors in high-poverty elementary schools in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Jennifer deGuzman is the Vice-Chair for the JLC’s committee leading the charge to offer support to Heart Math. When asked what she was most excited about for partnership, deGuzman replied: “Volunteers have the opportunity to be paired with one to two elementary school children and really build a rapport with the child. We are excited for our committee to be making such an impact of children’s’ lives.”
Noted on Heart Math’s website, their mission is:
“To ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Community members commit one hour per week to deliver an effective, hands-on curriculum through one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day in high-poverty elementary schools.”
deGuzman offered, “This type of volunteerism is what many of us think when the words ‘volunteer’ or ‘giving back to the community’ come to mind, so it’s great to see this type of one-on-one interaction as a placement option for our League.”
One interesting fact about Heart Math Tutoring is that the original name, “HEART,” was an acronym for “Helping Ensure Academic Results through Tutoring.” Learn more about Heart Math Tutoring here: https://hearttutoring.org/
