According to the Charlotte Observer, 75% of North Carolina’s poorest schools had an average final score of 52, which is a D rating when testing proficiency (Helms, 2018). Schools are labeled as “poorest” when at least 75% of students come from low income families (Helms, 2018). The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) and Heart Math Tutoring, a community partner, are committed to addressing this issue in the Charlotte area. Heart Math Tutoring is a math intervention program that helps underserved elementary schools by providing volunteers as tutors. The program provides training and support to the volunteers in order to create a strong foundation in math, while also fostering an excitement to learn. Heart Math Tutoring is a Charlotte based nonprofit and provides over 980 community members who spend 1 hour per week delivering a structured curriculum in Mecklenburg Schools.
The JLC provided 13 members who volunteered as tutors for Heart Math Tutoring for the 2018-2019 school year. These volunteers served across 10 schools and helped 98% of students meet program growth goals. We are so proud of the impact that can be seen as the JLC and Heart Math Tutoring partner to help students in the Charlotte area become school ready. The 2018-2019 results shown below are strong evidence of community impact and the value of trained volunteers. We are looking forward to a continued partnership for the 2019-2020 school year.
Results seen with program (2018-2019):
·98% of over 3,400 students met program growth goals in math
· 92% of teachers observed an increase in confidence toward math in 2018/19 among the students involved
· 99% of volunteers and 93% of teachers rated that their experience in 2018/19 was positive
