Q: Tell me about yourself (where you were born/grew up, family background, early life)
A: I was born in Miami, Florida but moved to Harlingen, Texas when I was six years old. I have one younger brother and two step siblings. Growing up my family was very focused on education and working hard. I’ve always loved learning and am very passionate about education. I participated in ballet, tap and jazz for 11 years and always loved being involved with different organizations at school and in my community. I was always a fun loving, extroverted person who loved making people feel comfortable and welcome—which is still true today. I graduated from a math, science and engineering high school and went on to get my bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami, a master’s degree from Tulane and most recently a doctorate from Colorado Technical University. I loved marketing and business and ended up landing a managerial position at Target after graduating from Tulane. I spent a year in Atlanta and then decided to take a big leap and jump into product training at an automotive manufacturer. I moved to Charlotte not knowing anyone or anything about the city. I also knew nothing about cars, but I was a pro when it came to connecting with others. I quickly learned I was actually good at training and started to grow in my career. I received an Outstanding Leadership Award in 2019 and left the company feeling fulfilled and ready to embark on a new journey. I recently joined a new tech startup company in July called Flockjay. I am the new Alumni Success Manager and I absolutely love it!
In between all this I was lucky enough to meet the love of my life on OkCupid. I met my husband John back in 2014 as I was about to delete my dating profile. He was the last message I had in my inbox so I decided to give him a chance. We got engaged in 2016 and married in 2018. We’ve got two wonderful dogs, a somewhat insane cat, and a huge appreciation for online dating (ladies, don’t give up!).
Q: What have you gotten from the Junior League?
A: I joined the Junior League in 2015 and wasn’t sure what to expect. My mom was a Sustainer in Texas and I always remember her being so involved with the League. She made some lifelong friends, gave back to her community and had the opportunity to be a leader as well. I struggled to meet other women in Charlotte because of the nature of my work so when my mom brought up joining the Junior League, I knew I needed to look into it.
I’ve made some amazing friends and feel very grateful to be a part of this community. I feel empowered to do more and keep pushing towards my goals. It’s inspirational to see so many amazing and unique women be a part of one organization and it has really made me believe in myself and realize that I can do anything I set my mind to.
Q: What have you given to the Junior League?
A: I love making people feel included. Whether that’s someone who isn’t engaging much at a social event or someone sitting alone, I am always one to reach out and invite them to join. I have enjoyed sharing my experiences with Provisionals and seeing them thrive as Active members as well.
I was definitely hoping to do more as the MDC Special Events and Course Coordinator this year but I’m super proud of how our Music Bingo Social had 90 ladies join us! This year has been tough, but this role has been a fun challenge and I can’t wait for our spring events.
Q: How has the Junior League helped to develop your potential?
A: The JLC has taught me a lot about community and being a leader. I started off as a part of Big Shots Saturday and really enjoyed connecting with people in Charlotte. I’ve spent the last two years being a part of MDC and getting to know the Provisionals. I’ve been an MDC advisor, an MDC Advisor Area Leader, and now I am the MDC Special Events and Course Coordinator. I’ve learned a lot from each role and made some awesome friends along the way!
Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: I miss being carefree. To an extent, you didn’t really have to worry about your weight, paying bills or what your five year plan is. You just played outside, went to school and lived your best life.
Q: If you could choose anything to do for a day, what would it be and why?
A: This is random but I would love to be a venture capitalist or angel investor. I’d love to be able to support startups, especially those owned by women. I would love to hear their ideas and help them reach their full potential.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your career?
A: I work at a company called Flockjay where we help people from underrepresented groups break into tech sales. We train them, prepare them for their future roles and support them throughout their career. My responsibility is to help build an alumni community through programs and different initiatives. I love seeing our alumni’s faces light up when they see each other for the first time in a long time. I also love hearing from the alumni that they loved the events and learned a lot. I feel like each little project makes a difference and it really makes me happy to know that.
Q: Who is your hero and why?
A: My late aunt Claudia was just amazing. She and my dad grew up in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and didn’t have much. They both worked so hard and ended up having amazing careers. They both inspired me to work hard but my aunt and I actually got the chance to work closely. She owned and operated duty free stores in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale. She wanted me to carry on the business and together we opened up a new duty free store in Melbourne, FL that we own and operate. I plan on making her proud through that store and more in the future.
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I absolutely love Harry Potter! I read the first three books growing up but stopped and just watched the movies. Over the last few years I drove a lot for my previous job and ended up listening to all of them on Audible and fell even more in love with them.
Q: How do you think your friends would describe you?
A: I’m fun and very lively. I try to be the glue that keeps people together and always come up with something fun to do (especially playing games). I’m kind of a dork but I’ve embraced it. I’ll always make you dance—even without a dance floor. I will always try to get you to try new things and enjoy life.
