Susan Butler is an accountant turned travel expert originally from Texas. Passionate about travel, she started her own travel agency devoting her life to helping others see the world.
Early Life & Building a Business
I was born and raised in Waco, Texas. I am the middle of two sisters and am fortunate to have both my parents still living. I went to Texas A&M for undergraduate and graduate school. I obtained my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license while working for Deloitte & Touche and eventually went on to work for Texas Children’s Hospital in their finance and operations department. I now run my own travel agency, The Travel Butler.
In college, I studied abroad for a semester in Italy. I fell in love with experiencing how others outside the USA lived. My passion for international travel and exploration skyrocketed and while working as a CPA, I traveled as often as I possibly could. I was not enjoying being an accountant and knew I wanted to start my own business. It made sense to marry my passion for all things travel into a career where I could help people have the best travel experience possible. I am celebrating ten years in business and love what I do more each day! My clients are like family and it is a joy to help them create memories that will last a lifetime!
Knowing I am helping people and impacting their life in a positive way is my favorite thing about my career.
Building a successful business from the ground up all by myself is my proudest accomplishment.
League Experience
The Junior League of Charlotte (JLC) has given me immense opportunities to grow personally and professionally, to volunteer in the community where I live and to create lasting friendships with a diverse group of high-caliber women. As as a member of the JLC I have assisted with fundraising, social events, professional development and volunteering to support community partner organizations.
The JLC has enhanced my leadership and organization skills, taught me how to become an advocate for community needs and further develop quality interpersonal skills. In terms of being a change agent, I am someone who is willing to take risks and doesn’t claim to always know the answer. I am willing to ask hard questions and help find creative solutions.
I think outside the box and strive to make an impact that is greater than myself while empowering others.
Knowing I am helping people and impacting their life in a positive way motivates me to work hard.
Fun Facts About Susan
I love being active outdoors (hiking, fishing, boating, etc.), cooking, trying new restaurants, traveling (of course!), and spending time with my family and friends. My best friend would describe me as bubbly, adventurous, happy, silly, talkative, empathetic, judicious, thoughtful and caring.
Spending time with my family taking road trips to the US National Parks is my favorite childhood memory. One of my most impressionable memories was hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with my dad when it was 115 degrees on the canyon floor. It was an experience I’ll never forget! My parents are my personal heroes because they are the epitome of a committed, loving relationship and the most generous, kind people I know.
