Each summer as the League year wraps up and the Active members begin to move into their new placements, the Membership Development Committee has a quick turn around between graduating the Provisional class to Active membership and welcoming a new Provisional class. All this happens within 45 days. This year, the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) welcomed 125 Provisionals into the League who have already begun to work through their requirements and are making great progress toward becoming Active members.
In late-June and early-July, the 2019-20 Membership Development Committee hosted Provisional kick-off events at the JLC building. New Provisional members had the opportunity to hear from several leaders from around the League, including JLC President, Tricia Magee, and JLC President-Elect, Charlitta Hatch. Tricia and Charlitta officially welcomed the Provisionals to the JLC, shared their League stories and dove into the impact we see every day in the community as a result of our voluntarism.
At kick-off, Provisionals were given an overview of what they will learn during their journey to Active membership this year. Each Provisional is required to complete 25 hours of community service in the Charlotte community that aligns with our School Ready community focus. A major initiative of this year’s Membership Development Committee is to expand volunteer opportunities for Provisionals to engage with more of our community partners so that we can not only give back, but also to provide Provisional members with experience in various placements around the League.
Each Provisional Small Group also has the opportunity to create their own volunteer projects within our School Ready community focus areas in the Charlotte community. Projects from previous years have included volunteering with elementary schools in priority zip codes, making meals with the Ronald McDonald House, and hand-making blankets for Baby Bundles.
We can’t wait to see the great things this year’s amazing group of ladies is sure to accomplish in our community on their journey to Active membership, all while learning how the League operates and meeting new faces every day. We hope you are as excited as we are to welcome the 2019-2020 Provisional class.
