We Built This City: Deborah Harris

By Olivia Hubert

Charlotte is home to many artists and patrons who love the arts. Almost thirty years ago Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) Sustainer Deborah Harris helped build the Queen City by spearheading the creation of one of Charlotte’s most popular performing arts venues — the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. She went on to become the Founding Chairman, contributing to the planning, growth, and continued success of the Blumenthal.

Deborah served as President of the JLC in 1987, where she learned some valuable leadership skills that allowed her to make an impact within the League and in the city.  Her training from the JLC played a role in her ability to work with the people and organizations that could help build a performing arts center. By the time she envisioned the Blumenthal, her League training had equipped her to set up a Board of Directors and committee structure, write a mission statement, and have a better understanding of nonprofit bylaws.

While raising money for the performing arts center, Deborah went before the North Carolina State Legislature, Charlotte City Council, and other organizations to request funding and support.  The leadership skills she gained from the JLC prepared her to effectively communicate the need for a performing arts center, secure the funds, and work with many people to ultimately build the Blumenthal.

Being a member of the JLC has been a vital part of Deborah’s life.  She sustained many friendships from her time with the League, and received vital skills from trainings that helped her to be a part of leading to the creation of what has become a staple in the Charlotte community in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
