On this #WeConnectWednesday, we are taking a look at how JLC members are connecting with each other and for our community. Our February Small Group Meetings – called Learning Journeys – provide JLC members the opportunity to learn more about other non-profit organizations in our community. Listen to what Morgan Lendino had to say after attending a small group meeting for the Lunch Project:
“I really enjoyed attending the JLC February small group meeting that focused on The Lunch Project initiative. It is a local grown organization that feeds primary school children attending public school in Tanzania. Right now the program feeds over 1800 students at 2 schools. This breaks down to approximately 9 cents/student and $85/day to feed 900 students at each school. I didn’t realize that Tanzania was facing a chronic food shortage for students in primary schools and that in the past few years Tanzania passed a law that requires all primary aged children to register at public schools. In most schools, this means that children attend school (normally walking 1-5 miles each way) for 8 hours a day without any food. The Lunch Project is fixing this problem one school at a time, and in just the few years it has been around has seen a dramatic increase in attendance of children at these schools and in test scores. I think as an American growing up in an American school system, we forget that in a lot of countries the basic necessities, such as food, don’t exist to help children grow and progress in their studies. This was a great meeting and I learned more than I thought I would in less than 2 hours. Who knew food could be so important to education!”
