When you associate the term “connect,” the Junior League of Charlotte (JLC)’s Membership Development Committee (MDC) is front and center. MDC Chair Charlitta Roberson leads the charge in terms of creating connections among provisional members as well as with actives and sustainers.
Ever since she was a teenager, Charlitta Roberson knew she wanted to become a member of the JLC. Her mentor and role model Debra C. Smith had been an active member with the JLC before she sustained, and Charlitta could not wait to join. She longed for the day she could join the JLC and give back to others the way Debra had given back to her. Leadership was important to Charlitta so she could have a voice and help influence and shape the direction of the JLC.
As a native Charlottean, Charlitta is especially committed to making Charlotte a better place for women and children. “In my opinion, you can’t have that commitment without being a member of the JLC,” says Roberson.
According to Charlitta, this year’s provisional class is off to a great start with 15 advisors and 150 provisionals. In addition, MDC has focused on its partnership with the Community Impact Council and the Community Capstone Project. Mary Jordan Benoit’s small group was the first group to complete its Capstone project, raising more than $2,500 in toiletries for Reid Park Academy. This is the first year in some time that the JLC has executed the one-year program, and it’s been rewarding to have more time to foster relationships and connect as a provisional group.
The MDC Committee continues to live the ‘We Connect’ theme by taking the extra time to find ways for the provisional class to connect with active and sustaining members of the League. MDC wants to ensure that when the provisionals begin their active year, they are able to remember that connection to continue to motivate them to stay involved with the JLC.
Charlitta witnesses ‘We Connect’ moments happening across the spectrum within the League. When Sustainer President, Liz Foster, reached out to host the holiday party for the provisionals, the invitation brought a festive meaning to this year’s theme. This was a special event for all and demonstrates that the entire JLC is committed to reaching out and connecting.
